  • Curriculum vitae gives emphasis on academic details, Resume is focused on non-academic details along with highlighting key skills and competencies, matching with the job.
  • Curriculum vitae is suitable when applying for academic positions, fellowship, advanced research, etc. On the other hand, Resume is accurate when applying for the internships or taking part in the job fair.
  • Curriculum Vitae focuses on expertise, i.e. what makes you an expert in the field, you have chosen to study. On the contrary, resume concentrates on contribution, how your work made a difference where you have worked.
  • The length of a resume is shorter as compared to curriculum vitae.
  • A curriculum vitae includes references. In contrast to Resume, which do not include references.

What to Include in a Curriculum Vitae 

When applying for certain job positions, you may be required to submit a curriculum vitae rather than a resume, so it is important to focus on tips, skill and maneuver on how to write curriculum vitae rather than a resume.


Before start writing your curriculum vitae, you must know what information a curriculum vitae generally contains. Most curriculum vitaes include your personal information, your education and qualifications, your work experience, your interests and achievements, your skills, and references.


So first, consider the job you are applying for. A great curriculum vitae must reflect the specific job and company you are applying for.

  • What does the company do?
  • What is their mission statement?
  • What do you think they are looking for in an employee?
  • What skills does the specific job you are applying for require?

Then, create a list of jobs you have held to show how expirienced you are.

These can be both job you hold currently and jobs you have held in the past including internships and volunteering jobs if you are fresh from school.

Include the dates that you began and ended your term at each particular job.After that, Make a list of your relevant skills

Eg; Computer Skills, Languages you speak or specific things the company is looking for, such as targeted skills.

Example If you are applying for a computer programing job, mention that you have worked with JavaScript, PHP etc. or If you are applying for a research, mention you have some data management skills etc. 


Lastly, brainstorm your hobbies and interests. Unique interests or hobbies will make you stand out. Be aware of the conclusions that might be drawn from your hobbies.

Try to list hobbies that portray you as a team-oriented individual rather than as a solitary, passive person. Companies want someone who works well with others.

  • Use bolding and CAPs to have things stand out 
  • Same font throughout (may vary sizing some) 
  • No graphics

  • Clear: Well-organized and logical 
  • Concise: Relevant and necessary 
  • Complete: Includes everything you need 
  • Consistent: Don’t mix styles or fonts 
  • Current: Up-to-date
